In June of 2010 Baija contacted me to discuss the opportunity to DJ their wedding at the Coronado Naval Base. We discussed some ideas for her wedding, and although she was unable to meet in person she did in fact book me and we took care of many details over the phone until we were able to meet. During the time before her wedding, she became aware of some construction going on at the Base and was concerned that it would still be occuring during her wedding day. This would not be good for her wedding photos, so she cancelled the venue and instead booked The Ranch House at Del Sur. She informed me of the change and I made a note of it. I usually never have any issue if someone changes their venue. I was able to adapt plans easily. For those that are not familiar with it, The Ranch House at Del Sur is the information center for the newly opened master-planned community by Black Mountain Ranch LLC in north San Diego.
On the day of their reception, I arrived at the venue and set up my equipment for their ceremony. I kept my equipment completely hidden except for the speakers, which I placed on the lawn. For seating music, they chose Vitamin String Quartet.
They had Clover, their daughter, in their ceremony as well, but since she wasn’t old enough to walk yet, the flower girl and ring bearer brought her up in a cute wagon.
Parents seating (Begin ceremony): Heaven’s gonna burn your eyes – Thievery Corporation
Bridesmaids entrance: Porcelain – Moby
Bride entrance: Lillac Wine – Jeff Buckly
Recessional: Today – Smashing Pumpkins
Grand Entrance: Sean Kingston – Fire Burning
Right after their grand entrance, and another enthusiastic round of applause, I instructed the guests to be seated and we began a buffet dinner catered by Rudy’s Taco Shop. Tables were dismissed by me, two at a time. The food was a delicious assortment of mexican appetizers and main courses, including chips, ceviche, tacos, burritos, and enchiladas.
Dinner Music: Classic Rock
Towards the end of dinner, their daughter, Clover, was not going to be able to stay awake much longer, so we sped up plans for their special dance with their daughter.
After putting Clover to bed, we began toasts. Then, we had the first dance!
First Dance: Lucky – Jason Mraz/Colbie Callet
Here’s a fun tweak to the next dance. Baija’s father absolutely cannot stand Bette Midler – Wind Beneath My Wings so we played a little trick on him and started the Father Daughter dance with it… then after seeing the reaction on his face I said “Just Kidding!” and switched to their real first song…
Father Daughter Dance: Heartland – I Loved Her First
Mother Son Dance: Shenandoah - Mama knows
Afterwards, we opened the floor for dancing. I didn’t get many pictures myself of guests dancing, so I’m some of Baija’s. We started with The Cure – Mint Car.
After a bit we took a break for a cake ceremony. Baija and Brian cut a small cake, but the guests enjoyed different ‘cakes’, which were more like brownies inside large shot glasses, which doubled as gifts and souvenirs for their guests. I tried one myself… it was delicious!
Cake Cutting: The Beatles – When I’m Sixty-four
After cakes, we went back into more open dancing. This was such a fun group to DJ for! I got to do some sets of genres that I rarely get to enjoy, but they are some of my favorite genres! Sets like New Jack Swing and 80′s Freestyle. It was such fun, I was talking about it with fellow DJs for weeks afterwards!
Baija and Brian chose to keep the energy high during the last song. I honestly can’t recall what it was… we were all having such fun I just picked one that seemed fitting and everyone danced to it.
Afterwards, everyone went out in front to board a party bus limo which took everyone to the afterparty. But, not before I got my signature post-reception picture with the happy bride and groom!
Congratulations to the Felloneys and their families, and thanks for giving me the opportunity to be a part of your special night!
