Vaughn and Serena had their wedding ceremony on Shadowridge’s green, at the gazebo.

It was a very interesting ceremony, to say the least! There was a drizzle of rain which started 10-15 minutes before the ceremony and didn’t let up until it was over. I was able to cover my system and keep the sound going, and the officiant, Bethel Nathan, kept the ceremony going without missing a beat, rain or not. For those looking for an officiant who can inject a little humor into your ceremony, I’d recommend checking out Bethel’s services.

Cocktail Hour

After the ceremony guests were shuttled back to the ballroom. They enjoyed a folk-music playlist while enjoying the personal touches that Vaughn and Serena had worked hard on.

I guess I should preface the rest of this blog entry to explaining that both the bride and groom were self-proclaimed nerds and geeks. Everyone in attendance knew this, and this fact was even mentioned several times during toasts. To that end, they loved geeky things like Star Wars and video games. Their decor definitely represented themselves well– Things like candle holders made out of cassette tapes where placed around the room to give it a very geek-chic look.

Serena also had an aversion to fast changing lights, so my standard dance lighting wouldn’t work for her. To work with this limitation yet provide a great feel for their cocktail/dinner and dance time, we worked out a customized computer-controlled uplighting setup. Their wedding colors were purple and green, so for cocktail and dinner, I set the lights up staggered with purple and green colors. Every 10 minutes or so, the lights would actually switch colors slowly, the greens becoming purple and the purple becoming green. Guests loved it, and once they realized it was happening, they would actually start staring at the uplighting waiting for the color changing to occur! Here’s a quick video showing the lights changing.

Did I mention that Vaughn and Serena are proud geeks? This should drive that point home– I played the Star Wars Cantina Band theme while Serena threw a Chewbacca doll to the unmarried women. Too fun!

Of course I had to get my signature photo with my happy clients.

A rocking good DJ posted 9/23/2012 (link goes straight to review)

We picked Dennis to DJ our wedding because of his good recommendations on the Knot and Yelp, and he more than lived up to our expectations. What I like most about Dennis is that he delivers on his promises and provides great customer service. When we first sat down with Dennis he sat down with us and explained everything we could expect and what options were available to us. He listened to our requests and gave us suggestions tailored to our desired wedding experience. The day of our wedding, Dennis was a perfect showman and professional. He made sure our ceremony went smoothly despite being outside and dealing with a brief rain shower. At the reception he gave us an excellent entrance, a great set of first dances, and a truly incredible mix of music for the dance floor. All of my guests commented on what a great time they had dancing and his perfect selection of songs. I also highly recommend Dennis’ up-lighting. He made an otherwise bland-looking room come alive and shine. Talk to this man, tell him what you want, and watch him deliver. You won’t regret the investment.

Due to the rainy weather, we made preparations to arrive at The Westin ahead of schedule. We set up around 2.5 hours ahead of time, which gave us time to set up a second wireless sound system. NetworkFleet's party consisted of the California Ballroom, split into two using a large white curtain. On one side of the curtain, there was a dining area where we set up. On the other side of the curtain, two bars were set up along with cocktail-hour appetizers. We set up a separate sound system consisting of two Peavey speakers and a 300 watt amp, and sent the same sound being played in the dining area to the amp using wireless transmission, giving guests the ability to hear music while on the other side of the curtain. Two gobo lights loaded with star gobos were placed on the cocktail side of the curtain, shining brightly into the curtain for that holiday atmosphere.
