As always, I can’t go anywhere without a review, so here goes:
The Handlery Hotel is a beautiful venue. We had our tenth reunion there as well, and both have been great. The staff is accommodating, and the rooms are nice and spacious.
The photographer of the night was Rhonda. She came across as a true professional in her field. She was courteous and friendly, and always in the right place at the right time so she never missed a photo opportunity. I had the pleasure of talking to her one-on-one during the latter part of the night, and we got along great. She mentioned needing some good DJs for the Temecula area so we may be working together a lot more in the future. She also mentioned some bridal consultants that were looking for good wedding DJs for the north county area and took five of my cards to give to them. I have a good feeling about her, and even at this point would not hesitate to recommend her for many types of events.
The DJ of the night will remain unnamed. I’m not in the business to slander my associates, but let’s just say… he fell short of my expectations. This was a reunion class of 1989. We grew up on club music such as freestyle (Debbie Deb, Stevie B) and ‘fun rap’. He played freestyle during the cocktail hour (yes, seriously), and then for the actual dance he went with most new-wave hits and disco. In my opinion, he was not the DJ we should have had for the event. To properly do a 1989 reunion, you really need someone who knew the club scene in 1989. This event needed someone who knows the value of Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy, and recognizes the group “Sleeze Boyz” (they did “Robocop” for those who didn’t know). So, he failed.
As for the actual reunion– What FUN! I saw friends that I haven’t talked to since the last days of HS, and also friends that I’ve seen once or twice afterwards but never stayed in touch with. What’s more, I made NEW friends from the old ones, and I’m actually hoping we might be able to stay more in touch now because we’re kind of like a big family. We have that commonality that is hard to break, we knew each other ‘way back when’ and now we’re all doing our own things. It’s really an amazing thing to see your classmates 20 years later, and I for one am grateful for the opportunity. Yes, I had to turn down numerous gigs (2 weddings, and a birthday party) in order to be able to fully appreciate the reunion, but I’m so glad I did! All work and no play does not a happy Dennis make.
Highlights of the evening included a projector presentation of ‘Video Yearbook’ which contained video taken during 1989, and a slideshow presentation listing the deceased members of our class, one of which died in 1985 and another that died only two years after graduation. One deceased member, Shawn Lushia, was not mentioned but he was a dear friend of mine and I found out via my friend David Sellers that he passed away due to a horrible collision in 2006.
Here’s a picture of our attendees. I’m in the top right.
