My good friend Marianne contacted me when her sister (Katie) and her fiance (Troy) needed a DJ for her wedding. Through Facebook chats, we arranged to all meet at their mother’s house. At our meeting, it became apparent that this was not going to be a normal wedding. Katie was very into indie music, and Troy enjoyed this as well as classic and modern rock. They stated that they didn’t expect to incorporate much of it into their wedding because they knew it wasn’t danceable music. For those that know me, my preference is to find the right way to incorporate a client’s tastes into their special day, and after much discussion we had found several ways we could incorporate their preferences and without too much culture shock to relatives and friends. I think that I helped ignite that spark that got them excited about customizing their wedding. They booked shortly afterward.
Their wedding ceremony and reception were held at Kona Kai Resort and Spa. The Kona Kai is a great wedding venue, with multiple rooms, delicious food, waterfront views, and most importantly to me– Great staff who treat clients and vendors very well!
Kona Kai Wedding Ceremony – Cabo Courtyard
The Cabo Courtyard at Kona Kai is a great location for a ceremony. The steps leading to the Kona Kai Lounge work nicely for a ceremony arch location, raising the ceremony to a level several feet above the seats of guests.
| Prelude Seating: | String Quartet Renditions of Classic and Current Rock Hits |
| Wedding Party Entrance: | Israel Kamawaiwo’ole – Somewhere over the rainbow |
| Bride’s Entrance: | Luca Spanio – Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (Guitar Orchestra) |
| Recessional: | MGMT – Kids (Dennis J Ceremony Edit) |
The ceremony was perfect, crystal-clear sound and a very entertaining performance by Bethel Nathan.
Note: Nearly all photos from this point forward were provided by One Stop Shot Photography.
After the ceremony, guests retired to the Dining Room while Katie and Troy and their wedding party took photos. One Stop Shot supplied this one to me to show the playfulness of their session. I love this photo!

The reception was held in Kona Kai’s Dining Room. To decorate this room, I supplied 12 high-powered state-of-the-art uplights and a cake spotlight for the cupcake tree.
The arch used for their Grand Entrance was also uplit on both sides.
To spotlight their large cupcake tree I used one of my newest purchases– A 50W white LED gobo projector with adjustable shutters to help shape the beam correctly.

Wedding Toasts
Once dinner was complete, we began toasts.
A special speech from the groom.
First Dance
This is one of my favorite photos of the night.
Wedding Dancing
After a minute or so of the First Dance we invited all other couples to join them…
… and then started some dance music.
I also got an opportunity to record a bit of video of the dance floor lighting combined with sound-activated uplighting I supplied.
After a bit of dancing we took a break for some more formal activities.

Post-Reception
After such a different yet fun wedding reception, I got a post-reception photo with the newlyweds.
I also got a photo with Marianne and their mother, Linda.
Congratulations to Troy and Katie and their families, and thanks for choosing The Creative Music DJ for your special day!
