Marina Village Weddings – Joseph and Crystal

I met Joseph and Crystal after Joseph’s grandmother found me while doing some research for quality entertainment. According to her, she was “… just trying to help them have a happy, trouble-free wedding, doing some research for them and helping organize.” We talked a bit with her via email and phone calls, then we met at her condo and had a great discussion about their music preferences, wedding ideas, and each other’s passions and lives.

In March I found myself back at Marina Village, this time in the Sunset Room. As their website states, Marina Village is one of San Diego’s only special event sites to offer banquet halls with multiple waterfront views. They also have two ceremony sites, offer very reasonable rates, and have friendly staff that I love working with time and time again.

Marina Village Ceremony – North Lawn

The North Lawn at Marina Village is very picturesque, but it has one caveat for vendors– There’s no power on the lawn. Many vendors run their cables all the way across the walkway to the closest power source which resides inside an enclosed area that looks like it was made for a dumpster. This method does work, however it leaves cables strewn across a public walkway. This is unsightly at best, and could be a potential hazard at worst. To mitigate this issue, I brought my custom-built portable battery pack. This pack enables me to supply ceremony power anywhere for over 10 hours, and reception power for a little over 4 hours. It’s also very compact and easy to hide.

I powered the above ceremony system and JBL Eon speakers. Fully covered for that professional look I know my clients expect.

The Sunset Room has a built-in DJ booth, but I prefer not to use it because it doesn’t allow guests to have easy access to me to request songs. As many know, I prefer to appear very approachable to guests and family, and will almost always request not to be in a booth if possible. Joseph and Crystal were happy to accommodate my request, and so I set up on the stage but not in the booth.

Green Gables Wedding Estate – Dan and Anna

For those that remember the Old Richland Schoolhouse, this venue will seem familiar… because that’s what it used to be. After it closed abruptly last year, San Diego Special Events Co. began leasing the property at 134 Woodland Parkway on Sept. 1, and reopened the venue for weddings– including several that were booked by couples before the closure. They’ve made several improvements, and the venue is looking rather nice in my opinion. From a vendor’s standpoint, the fact that they only do one wedding a day is a great feature. I was able to come in several hours before the event and take my time setting up. I always appreciate the ability to do this, as I can do sound checks and make sure everything is in order.

The grand tented pavilion showcases towering peaks of chiffon gathered over head with crystal chandeliers and intimate lighting. Surrounding it are cozy garden nooks and soothing sounds of the waterfalls setting a tone of peace and tranquility.

Dan and Anna contacted me in February 2012, after a family friend who was going to DJ their wedding ended up being unable to do so. We met nearby and discussed details, and hit it off pretty well. Of particular interest was the fact that their wedding was going to be “Mad Hatter” themed. I got excited when I heard that. Themed weddings are almost always a blast to perform at!

Wedding Ceremony

Due to weather conditions, Dan and Anna didn’t get to use the gazebo area for their ceremony. It rained pretty hard on their wedding day, so an alternate location was selected, inside the reception tent. Regardless, the ceremony was amazing. Right as it started, thunder erupted so loudly that it sounded like it was right outside the tent. Guests took it in stride with applause, and it was honestly one of the most entertaining and excitement-filled ceremonies I’ve ever been a part of!

I’m not sure if the officiant was an industry professional or not, but I have to say he did a great job. And unlike many industry professionals I’ve worked with, he had to foresight to make sure to hold the mic out to the bride and groom for their vows, so everyone could hear them well.

The funniest part of the ceremony was when it was time to exchange rings. Somehow the rings had gotten dumped in the arbor base, and several guests/parents rushed forward to sift through the base and find the rings quickly!

Guests had fun and took it all in with glee, leading to a wonderful processional.

Toasts were done by the Father of the Bride, Best Man, Maid Of Honor, then opened up for 3 additional toasts, and closed with a Bride and Groom thanks speech.

Dan and Anna combined their parent dances together into one dance. Dan’s mother had just been in an accident and was wheelchair-bound, but they didn’t let that stop them from an enjoyable dance! They switched partners a couple times through the dance as well.

Dan and Anna requested that Don Omar’s song, Danza Kuduro be played so they could dance with their guests to it. I don’t know the dance, but apparently it has to do with holding onto each other, going around and under arms, but never letting go of those you are holding. It looked fun!

Hilton Torrey Pines Wedding – Jeff and Zoe

Jeff and Zoe contacted me last year to discuss DJing their wedding. Although they live in LA, they were having their wedding in San Diego. Coincidentally, I had a trip planned to LA for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in Whittier, and was able to plan a meeting with them to coincide with this event. We had a great meeting, and they booked soon after.

Jeff and Zoe had their ceremony outside the Grande Ballroom, on the Ballroom Terrace. This ceremony had an interesting feature that I’ve never seen at an outdoor wedding before– A crystal chandelier that had been transported from LA just for the occasion! It sparkled while suspended at the top of the truss wedding arch.

Once the ceremony was over, the guests were invited into the ballroom where they mingled while the newlyweds and their wedding party took photos.

Wedding Monogram

Jeff and Zoe wanted their family crest for their monogram. I worked with them to get a high-quality vector image from their graphic designer, and after talking with them about their options (metal, greyscale glass, etc) they decided that it is important to them to have all the proper colors represented in their monogram. I proceeded to order a full-color glass wedding monogram gobo for them. The template sent to my gobo vendor looked like this.

In actual application, it looked like this on their dance floor.

Jeff and Zoe took advantage of my uplighting package and decided on 16 uplights, which they wanted in pairs (two colors side by side at each spot). They draped the entire room so the uplighting really looked good on the white drapes.

As you can see, they chose to utilize my cake lighting services. I supplied dual-colored underlighting.

We had a really fun time full of activities such as the Anniversary Dance, Conga dancing, and even some limbo dancing! Before Jeff and Zoe left, I made sure to get my signature post-reception photo with the newlyweds.

A new addition that has been added to The Creative Music DJ services is live video mixing. Videos to the songs that are being played on your dance floor can be played onto 1-2 large LCD monitor(s), or even a 7′ wide projector screen. It’s a sure-bet enhancement to your event, and available for a nominal additional fee. Ask about it if you are interested!

To give you an example of the quality and smoothness of the video mixes, here’s an example of a top40 mix I recently made.

San Diego Quinceanera – Vanessa

Sandra, Vanessa and I met in September of 2011 to discuss her daughter Vanessa’s Quinceanera. I do not speak fluent Spanish, but I do have knowledge of the events of a Quinceanera or Spanish-style wedding and I’m often contracted for Latin events when Spanish is not necessary. Sandra and Vanessa insisted that my lack of fluency in Spanish was not an issue, and they were very interested in hiring me for my style and ability to read a dance floor and keep people dancing. We discussed more ideas they had for their event and had a great meeting. Within a few days, they had booked and we were set for an amazing birthday party!

Quinceanera Reception

Vanessa celebrated her Quinceanera reception at the Church of Saint Luke in their reception hall. The theme for her party was “Arabian Nights”. To complement this theme, I supplied 12 uplights, matched to her two accent colors– a light blue and a gold shade.

The Introduction of the Court of Honor

Once appetizer hour was over, we seated the guests and began the Introduction of the Court of Honor. Unfortunately, I don’t have any photos of this because I was too busy doing the announcements as well as concentrating on pronouncing the names of the Chamberlains and Damas correctly!

The Presentation of the Quinceanera

After the introduction of the Court, I introduced the Quinceanera. She entered onto the dance floor with her escort, the Chamberlain de Honor.

After her introduction, Vanessa began her waltz (hopefully photos coming soon).

Dinner Show

After the waltz, dinner was served. During the first half of dinner, the Academy of Egyptian Dance performed.

One of my favorite moments of the night occurred during this portion. Sandra got out on the dance floor and started belly dancing with the performers!

And then Vanessa joined her mom and the dancers on the floor as well!

Once the dinner show and dinner were over, I announced the brindis (toast) and handed the mic to Vanessa’s father, Jose.

After the toast, we began the Father Daughter Waltz. And, I demonstrated my lack of photography skills rather well.

To keep the guests entertained while they were served and ate their cake, we played a video montage using my 3500 lumens projector. Since we had a perfectly smooth white wall my client requested that I project directly onto the wall. It worked well.

Surprise Dance by the Court of Honor

After the cake cutting, the Court of Honor performed a surprise dance for the guests. The music was a medley of ageless hits, such as Elvis, Michael Jackson, etc.

We then went back into open dancing, starting with a special dance where the Quinceanera danced with all of her uncles.

Bahia Weddings and Events – Dean and Lisa

Dean and Lisa chose to have their wedding ceremony and reception at Bahia Resort. This is a great venue for weddings, and one that I really enjoy working at due to the attentive staff and beach atmosphere. Their reception was held in the Del Mar Ballroom.

Wedding Ceremony

Dean and Lisa had their ceremony on the beach directly outside of the Del Mar Ballroom, but it was in no way a traditional ceremony! From the first event to the last, this was a ceremony of unique ideas and lasting memories.

To begin the ceremony, they did a sand pouring, but instead of the bride and groom participating, it was the mothers of the bride and groom who poured the sand.

Then, they did a ‘Star Wars’ entrance. The officiant was garbed in a black robe which dragged on the ground behind him, in the style of a Sith Lord. Dean and the officiant walked to the beginning of the chairs, shook hands, then the officiant continued to the altar. As he walked to the altar, I played the Imperial Death March.

Dean and Lisa then met up and walked the remainder of the way to the altar together.

Once married, they each took out their cell phones for what they called the ‘official declaration of their marriage’– The changing of their Facebook statuses to “married”!

Cocktail hour was held on the Outdoor Patio.

For their reception area, I set up four uplights and a cake pinspot. These lights really made this room’s ambiance change dramatically!

They had a cupcake tree with a small cake in the top center which I pinspotted for added effect.

Hotel Del Coronado Weddings and Events – ModelN

In mid-February this year, I was contacted by a company and asked to DJ a national convention for ModelN. This was a nice break from the usual weddings in San Diego I’m accustomed to doing, and I was able to really have some fun with the music.

Hotel Del Coronado is a very nice hotel in Coronado. It has a classic mixed with modern feel, which is apparent even when outside viewing the front of the building.

For ModelN’s corporate welcome party, I set up on the Windsor Lawn, facing the hotel.

I have not been able to contact the photographer and I took very few photos of the events, so this blog post will be rather scarce on photos, sorry!

I did manage to get a photo of my setup before guests arrived. Weather predictions were giving a decent chance of light showers, so we used umbrella to shade my equipment. Even for a corporate party my setup is clean and professional looking, with pole sleeves and skirts for that added classiness.

And here’s where the guests mingled.

Right before guests arrived, I put the camera away so I could concentrate on mixing.

Music Selection

Music was varied. I was hired to just play entertaining music while guests mingled. There was no dance floor, therefore the music choices I had to select from were vast. To someone who prides themselves on their knowledge of music, this presents a fun opportunity to express oneself while keeping everyone energized and alert.

Most notable event of the night was when I dropped a 80s freestyle track, and one of the guests came over and said that he recognized me from when I DJ’d at Club A’s in Tijuana. Wow, how could he recognize me from way back when, right? Well, that was my cue to go into a “Club A’s throwback” set so I started throwing down more freestyle, and stuff from back in the day like Stephen Tin Tin Duffy and New Order. Guests were giving me thumbs-up and even coming over for a high-five and/or fist-pound.

Post-Reception

Wendy came over to tell me that she enjoyed what I was doing, but then also that she was going inside. I didn’t get to take a photo with her, but I can definitely say she was a satisfied client.

Loews Coronado Wedding – Greg and Megan

Greg and Megan chose to have their wedding reception at Loews Coronado Hotel, a wonderfully lavish hotel located in Coronado.

Greg and Megan had their ceremony in a church. Once the ceremony was over, the guests arrived at the hotel where they mingled in the foyer enjoying music from the wireless cocktail speakers I supplied.

Cocktail hour was held on the outdoor patio. To provide sound outside for this, I used my wireless speaker system.

Wedding Uplighting

Greg and Megan took advantage of my uplighting package and decided on 12 blue uplights. Uplighting works really well at Loews, despite the shortage of electrical outlets. Once you’ve worked there a few times you start to know the tricks to getting power to your lights, thankfully!

I was also able to capture a cool panorama of the uplights using my iPhone4.

As you can see, they chose to utilize my cake lighting services as well, and I supplied both table underlighting and pinspotting.

The quality and wide-spread of my uplights really shows well in this photo.

Scripps Forum Wedding – Robert and Candace

Robert and Candace chose to have their wedding ceremony and reception at Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society and the Environment. This is a beautiful oceanfront venue located in La Jolla. It seems to appeal to those that want a relaxed atmosphere and yet a modern look. They chose to have their reception in the Charles E. Scripps room, a small room in the front of the building. For a destination wedding with a limited amount of guests, it definitely worked well.

Robert and Candace had their ceremony on the oceanfront lawn outside the Scripps Seaside Forum. An interesting story was to had here. Originally, they decided to omit my ceremony services and do the ceremony by themselves. To accomplish this, they had an iPod Touch, and a battery powered speaker. Unfortunately, they miscalculated the ability of their speaker, and it wasn’t able to do the job. Since I arrived at the venue with plenty of spare time, I had already (mostly) set up my reception system and was aware of their issue. I did some tests with the speaker, and no matter what I tried I just couldn’t get both their microphone and iPod to be loud enough! (Post-event research shows why– It supplied a mere 5 watts!)

When the best man came me with the issue, I suggested adding my ceremony package and they happily agreed. It made all the difference with their ceremony!

When I attempted to get the correct ones, I was told I could only have about a third of what I wanted so I chose to just use the ones I received. We planned our San Diego wedding from Phoenix, so we had not met Dennis before our wedding day. We had no wedding planner, and neither of us had ever been through a wedding before, so inevitably there were a few things on the wedding day that we realized we hadn’t thought of. The day of the wedding we panicked, realizing that we needed a PA for the ceremony. Dennis was super flexible with our reservation, he showed up early and set us up with a killer PA system at the last minute. After the ceremony, he coordinated with the caterers and sorted out the entrance of the wedding party into the reception, and the first dances. Dennis was absolutely brilliant in ensuring that the reception flowed perfectly. Oh, he also plays great music. He played all the stuff we wanted him to play, took requests, and filled in the gaps expertly. He has an outstanding understanding of musical tastes; if you ask for Standards, he’ll play the good ones, if you ask for Ambient, you’ll get it, and if you ask him not to play ‘The Macarena’ he gets that you probably don’t want to hear ‘The Chicken Dance’ or ‘Cha Cha Slide’ either. The dance floor was packed the whole time, and at the end of the night nobody wanted to leave. On top of everything, Dennis set up a huge surprise for us at the end of the night that my wife and I will never forget. I could not imagine anybody having done a better job. Hire him, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

MCASD Museum Of Contemporary Art San Diego Wedding – Andrew and Tyra

Andrew and Tyra chose to have their wedding ceremony at Golden Hill Park and their reception at Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) in Downtown San Diego. This is not the MCASD which is located in La Jolla. It is located on Kettner Blvd, and although it shares a name with its La Jolla counterpart, the similarities stop there! The venue seems dedicated to displaying artist’s work in the form of a full video immersion experience. At the time of their wedding, MCASD was displaying the works of Jennifer Steinkamp, titled “Madame Curie.” This work is a combination of moving flowers and flowering trees, and it really can make you feel like you’re entwined in a giant field of foilage. Around 40 flowers and plants were used, all of which were mentioned in Madame Curie’s biography. To display this work, the museum uses seven projectors projecting video onto three walls. Obviously that concept is hard to understand, so after I set up my equipment and was waiting for guests to arrive, I made a video of my surroundings to demonstrate.

Andrew and Tyra had their ceremony at Golden Hill Park. This is a ceremony area which has strict rules against ‘amplied music’. They chose to use a live band for their music, but still contracted with me to provide a battery pack, speakers, and wireless microphones for their officiant and singer of the band.

Cocktail music was provided while guests arrived from Golden Hill Park. Andrew and Tyra stuck with the classics… mostly Rat Pack songs. I had my equipment set up in a corner of the room, designating a clear dance floor area for guests.

Also something to note– My speakers are angled downward. Does this seem strange? It’s actually a great feature of the JBL PRX series speakers I use. Consider this room… It’s a giant rectangle, with very few items in the room, much like all museums. Sound projected directly onto a wall bounces off the wall, creating a crazy amount of echo in a large empty room. To mitigate this, I use the alternate pole sockets on my PRXes, aiming the music downward, which makes it bounce off the floor at an angle and into the ceiling, eliminating echo. It works well, and is something any trained audio technician should know to do. My years of experience installing, configuring, and fixing audio equipment at retail venues make me a valuable asset to clients.

Once guests arrived, I invited them all to find tables or belly bars and began the Grand Entrance. Photos from this point on were provided by the talented Breanna Carin Photography.

Here’s something funny I have to mention. For some reason, the computers providing video to the projectors were all set to go off at different times, but weirdly enough, all these times were before their reception had ended. The computers were running windows, and a window would pop up on the screen saying ‘this computer is shutting down in 60 seconds’. Guests all joined in when each computer got to 10 seconds, chanting, “10… 9… 8… 7…” and then yelling and cheering as the computer shut down. Then a few minutes later another computer would start it’s shutdown cycle and the chanting would repeat. It was hilarious to watch, and the guests really got a kick out of it. I had to take a photo for my memoirs.

Grand Exit

For their Grand Exit, I instructed all guests to form a tunnel leading out out of the museum entrance, and we did a big send-off as they began their new life together.

Breanna Carin Photography also created a photobooth in the room right next to the dance floor. It worked really well… guests could dance and slip over to the booth then right back to the dance floor. I took a moment to get a photo with the newlyweds.
