DJ AM Wonderwall Routine – Breakbeat Identified

DJ AM Wonderwall Routine – Breakbeat Identified by DJ Dennis J

As many who know me personally undoubtedly know, I am a huge DJ AM fan. The man was a genius, and will be forever revered by many.

Along with many other DJ AM fans, I’ve been dying to find out where to get the breakbeat that he used on his infamous Wonderwall routine.

Well, I think I have figured it out! Many claimed it was a remixed version of Run DMC’s “Walk This Way” or a track on a DJ Rectangle record. Well, both are wrong. I believe the actual breakbeat used was hard to identify because it is created from two parts of a scratch sample record, which AM made his own breakbeat from.

Note: the actual breakbeat is 2 bars, yet I’ve only looped 1 bar for my demo. This is enough to tell you whether or not the breakbeat is the same.

At this time I’m not disclosing the origin because

1) I want to make sure this really is the track used. Please comment and tell me if you agree that this is the same breakbeat!

2) I want to see if anyone really cares enough to post something on their pages linking to this page.

Comment and let me know where you’ve linked and talked about this blog post, and if I see enough interest, I’ll disclose the origin!

San Diego Fundraiser for Haiti

Venue Type: Retreat
Venue Address: 10039 Fuerte Dr, San Diego, CA
Number of guests: 100+

Services Provided: Video equipment, supply, delivery, and set up/breakdown.

Creative Music DJs is now an “Angel of Haiti”.

To do this, we worked with Katey Fisher, an event coordinator in San Diego, to assist a prominent activist in her efforts to raise money to help those in Haiti that were affected by the recent disaster.

Dr. Carolle Jean-Murat is a Haitian Doctor who lives here in San Diego at her retreat. She has two non-profit organizations 1. Angels for Haiti and 2. Health Through Communications Foundation. She has built a school, a hospital and a park in Haiti and has also offered free medical care to several thrid world countries. This woman is amazing!

On January 23, 2010, Dr. Jean-Murat held a fundraiser at her San Diego retreat. For this fundraiser she had developed a slideshow showing some of the benefits that had been provided to Haiti via fundraising. She enlisted our help to supply equipment to project this slideshow for all guests to enjoy.

The fundraiser helped to raise close to $2000.00 to help with the Doctor’s cause, and we’re happy to have helped with this effort. The event was a success, and gained the coverage and attention of local news stations KSWB and KGTV 10News.

Paul Quigg, a Marine stationed in San Diego in the Wounded Warrior Battallion-West, contracted us to perform at their annual Military Ball. We provided music for their cocktail hour, dinner, and open dancing.

Marine Corp Ball Cocktail Hour

For those that do not know, the Marine Corp Ball is also the Marine Corp birthday celebration. To symbolize this, they have a ceremony and then a ‘cutting of the birthday cake’ ritual. The cool thing is that they bring the cake out with a lot of fanfare and then cut it with a SWORD! Yes, a sword. There’s not many cooler ways to cut cake, right? I mean, maybe a laser cutter, or a circular saw, but other than those, a SWORD pretty much tops the cake (pun intended).

The gig was a lot of fun. It was a six-hour event, with cocktail hour and dinner, like all military balls we’ve had the pleasure of being a part of. For a few video snippets and highlights see the video below. To hire us for your military ball, please visit our check availability page.

Pacific Ridge School – Halloween School Dance

Pacific Ridge School – Halloween School Dance

Client: Amy Wasserman
Venue Type: School
Venue Address: 6260 El Fuerte Street, Carlsbad, CA 92009
Number of guests: 120+
Services Provided: Dance (mostly top-40) music, premium dance floor lighting, wired microphone

Pacific Ridge School celebrated Halloween with a Friday night school dance, and Creative Music DJs was sub-contracted to provide the entertainment.
For those that do not know the location of Pacific Ridge School, let me tell you, it’s not easy to find in the dark! Our GPS took us to the side of a hill, which we apparently would need to go off-roading on in order to reach the school. Well, even though we have a Ford F-250 diesel truck, we were towing a trailer full of equipment that didn’t seem like it would do well in an off-road scenario, so we opted to find another route. After driving around a bit, we found a way around the hill and made it to the school.

The staff of Pacific Ridge School are very pleasant and helpful. The night security officer in specific was very helpful and friendly, and even helped bring some equipment in. While setting up, we attached an iPod to one of our powered speakers and started a playlist of spooky halloween sounds just to get the kids in the mood for the evening.

The kids were very excited to dance, several of which commenting on just that as we was setting up. Amy had not requested fog, just premium lighting, so we went with an assorted display of Vue IIIs, Mystiques, and a Galaxian laser.

The floor was packed all night, despite the fact that there were booths going on outside the dance room. Kids are notorious for letting DJs know when they like something, and this group was no exception. You could hear the exclamations of excitement when the songs they loved were played, as well as their thrills when a smooth transition was made into a song they had requested.

We set up a request form on the side of the DJ booth table, and kids were directed to write their requests into it. Next to each song, we would put a symbol, one meaning “we will not play this because of language”, another “we will not play this because of content”, and another meaning, “yes, expect this soon!”. In this way, we gave instant feedback and avoided repeat requests.

After the dance, we chatted with the students while tearing down equipment and received good feedback from them. We also talked with Amy and asked her to fill out a comment card, which she did, checking “excellent” in the area which asks for performance review. She also thanked us for maintaining clean versions all night long. There’s no doubt that this school dance was a success, and that the students will be talking favorably about it for weeks to come.

Thanks to Amy Wasserman, Primo DJs (for the referral), and the students and staff of Pacific Ridge School for inviting us to be a part of their halloween dance!

Steve and Rick, a gay married couple, celebrated their 35th anniversary on October 24th, and Creative Music DJs was contracted to provide the entertainment.

Steve and Rick were referred to us by a friend of theirs that knew someone who had attended another house party that we performed at earlier this year. I went to meet with them, and because of their total trust in their friend, they had no problem signing up. However when it came to the premium lighting, they balked. I assured them that is was worth it, and even suggested that they ask their friend for a reference on our lighting system (we work hard to create amazing lightshows). After a bit, both Steve and Rick were on-board, and as an afterthought, I’m sure they’re glad they did!

The gig was an absolute blast. We brought out an incredible combination of lights and laser machines, and after adding the fog we totally lit the place up. It was a six-hour party, with cocktail hour and dinner, much like a wedding. Very organized and elite. For cocktails and dinner, the request was to play uptempo smooth jazz with some easy listening 70’s peppered into the mix. I played a lot of smooth jazz and then threw in stuff like Kool and the Gang – Cherish; they loved it. Once dinner was done, I started with some medium-energy disco, stepped up the energy with some ’stayin alive’ then quickly made my way up to high-energy and kept it up there with more disco. After a while, I got a request for Cher – Believe, which was somewhat disco-ish but more house, so I mixed into that and thought, “this is the perfect opportunity to transition to 90’s house music”, so I went to Le Click “Tonight is the night”, then to ATC “Around the World” and then hit the big one with Darude “Sandstorm”. By now the dancefloor was packed, so I kept it going with some 2 Unlimited, and other 90s house hits, including some freestyle such as Debbie Deb and Stevie B.

When it seemed like the right time, I moved the era up and mixed in David Guetta’s “Sexy Chick” (clean versions of everything were used all night long) and then went back and forth from current house to 90s house until it was time for toasts and cake cutting.

During cake time, I took the opportunity to talk to guests and found that many of them were anxious to hear a ‘current club mix’, such as Jamie Foxx’s Blame It, and LMFAO’s Shots. I was pretty much planning that anyway, so it was good to know that I was ‘vibing’ with the guests. When I started the next set, the dance floor got even more packed than it had been, and we rocked on til the end of the party.

After the party, we talked at bit with our clients. They were very excited. Apparently all night long they had been getting compliments on the music, lighting, and choice of DJ company, and they were thrilled. Rick stated to me in no uncertain terms, “We will be doing business again!” Steve, was more calmed down, but he asked me to mail him several more business cards (I actually ran out of them that night, I swear every guest at the party came up and got a card from me!), and told me he was going to hand them out and make sure I got more business.

So all in all, it was an incredible night, one of the best we’ve had in a long time. Thanks to Steve and Rick for inviting us to be a part of their special celebration, and congrats to both of them on their 35th year together!
