Brad and Penny had their wedding at Candelas On The Bay in Coronado and chose me to be their Candelas Coronado wedding DJ. Their ceremony was on the Grassy Knoll, and their reception was held in the Bayfront Terrace. Cru Photography provided many of the photos being showcased in this blog. It was also cool to work with Bethel Nathan again, and the staff of Candelas were cordial and accommodating as always. Not to mention the food. The fooooood! You have to visit to understand. The food is amazing, to say the least.
Brad and Penny had a very intimate guest list. They arranged the seating in a spiral and had all that approached and left the ceremony altar travel through the spiral so that all guests could see them. It was quite a unique experience. It was definitely the first time I’ve seen this done, and I’ve seen quite a few wedding ceremonies!
Inside Candelas, I set my equipment up in the usual spot. Clean and professional as always.
Although a small guest count, the dance floor was never empty! Brad and Penny enjoyed time with all of their guests on and off the floor.
After the reception was over, the newlyweds actually hung out for a bit on the terrace just enjoying time with their guests. I took this opportunity to get my signature post-event photo.
Penny posted quite a detailed review after their wedding! The full review is on Yelp, but I’ve copied and pasted it here for ease of viewing. They even mentioned something which I didn’t include above– My acquisition of a knife for their cake cutting! When I was about to announce cake cutting I noticed that there was no knife on the cake table so I ran to the kitchen to get one. They gave me the first one they could find and clean, and I ran back with it. Apparently the knife choice was hilarious. Check out the review to see the photos they uploaded to show this moment!
This is going to be an extremely thorough review of all of our interactions from start to finish. I’ll spoil the ending, he is awesome and worth every penny
When I first contacted Dennis it was through email and we went over all of his different packages. He not only is a DJ but also provides uplighting, pin spot lighting (for the cake), dance lighting, and monograms for the dance floor. He also provides music for the ceremony, before it actually begins (seating music), and just all your musical needs throughout the procession and recession. He sent us a variety of links to previous weddings that he worked as well as many pictures showing us all of the different lighting could change the atmosphere and feel of a room.
When we decided to meet for the first time, Dennis was extremely prepared with a worksheet, timeline, and showing us his website as a potential client on how he prefers to work to get our day completely perfect. We went over specifics of certain events he would announce or emcee and specific times that he wanted us to zone in on to tell him where to be and what to say. During our very first meeting, we placed a deposit and went with him immediately. At no point throughout the planning process did I ever regret that decision as he always responded within 48 hours of an email and always returned my phone calls. What is so great about him is that every other vendor that I mentioned his name only had good things to say about him and that he is a well-seasoned professional in the wedding industry of San Diego.
The rest of our planning was through email and through phone calls as we lived in Sacramento at the time. He does require that you fill out his worksheet and timeline on the website and have it submitted and final with no more changes 1-2 weeks before the actual event. Though we submitted our worksheet, the day required a little more flexibility and Dennis was very accomodating since the actual ceremony ran a little longer than expected. Since I had a very small intimate wedding (less than 40 guests) he coached our wedding party where to walk and stand and guided them throughout all of their entrances, he acted more like coordinator as well and it was much appreciated.
He has an amazing speaking voice as he announced everyone who came to make a speech. He also socialized and mingled with all of my guests and just made everyone feel really comfortable. During our cake cutting, he even ran out to the back of the restaurant to get me a knife since the restaurant forgot to provide one, I attached that picture here it was hilarious! During open dancing, he played all the right songs and his ability to scratch with the turn table is awesome! He is really good at reading the crowd even my no nonsense aunts and uncles came out to dance. All the songs that I requested, the ones that he did not have, he had no trouble getting and our entire night went off without a hitch. He would bring the microphone to my parents and walk it back and forth to any of one of us waiting to speak during our little game we made for the guests. Overall, I highly recommend Dennis for all of your wedding musical needs, he really goes above and beyond what a DJ normally does and crossed the line over to coordinator, master of ceremonies, and did a great job emceeing as well!
